Pilgrimage Respecified: Falklands War Veterans’ Accounts of their Returns to the Falkland Islands

In 2002 the South Atlantic Medal Association organized its first ‘pilgrimage’ to Falkland Islands. Pilgrimages islands have since become a regular occurrence. Battlefield ‘pilgrimages’ are seen not only as ritual of remembrance dead, but cathartic act personal and bonded-group self-affirmation, understood by many an essential element psychological healing process after war. Yet public media representations dominated images parades, memorials wreath laying largely exclude voices veterans bereaved. Using memoirs, oral testimonies, autoethnography, veterans’ associations newsletters social sites sources, this article respecifies phenomenon ‘pilgrimage’, stressing unique adequacy members' practices amonst themselves constitutive pilgrimage experience. The paper questions future Falklands cultural conflict age, meaning location change.
